Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896 - 1940) was an outstanding American novelist and short story writer. In his best works Fitzgerald described convincingly the tragedy of man in capitaist society. The lust for money, inherent in the so-called "American Way of Life", proved a curse to many of his characters, and sometimes they became victims of their own wealth - like Major Jay Gatsby in our novel.
